Atmospheric Rivers Cause Unintended Consequences to Roofs & Buildings

Posted by Nicole Gale on Tue, Feb 21, 2023 @ 08:19 PM
Atmospheric Rivers NCCThe U.S. West Coast has been hit with several atmospheric rivers lately. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, these atmospheric rivers "are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky – that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics. These columns of vapor move with the weather, carrying an amount of water vapor roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. When the atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release this water vapor in the form of rain or snow."

Too much sustained wind and rain in a short period of time can cause all sorts of water damage to buildings due to unresolved or unknown roofing and building envelope issues. The recent storms on the West Coast have done just that. Excessive amounts of water damage to buildings have been reported and contractors are experiencing large amounts of leak repair calls. They are being inundated with work and foresee this entire year being very busy resolving these issues. As the Earth continues to warm, climate scientists are predicting these storms to occur more frequently, bringing even more destruction.

How Can You Protect Yourself?
We can't stop Mother Nature but we can implement ways to protect our buildings and the assets inside of them. We recommend scheduling a roof inspection or doing one yourself. If you see damage, ponding water, clogged drains, blisters, dried out roofing material, tears, etc... You need to get these areas fixed as soon as possible. National Coatings' AcryShield Roof Management (ARM) System is an excellent waterproofing solution. This system can be applied directly over your aged and or failing roof without a costly or time consuming roof tear-off and replacement. These systems are also fluid applied over virtually any roofing substrate for a custom tailored, seamless, monolithic rooftop. Why Roof Restoration is Far Greater than A New Roof

Posted by Nicole Gale on Tue, Sep 29, 2015 @ 11:00 AM

roof restorationRoof restoration provides a cost effective, sustainable, environmentally friendly option to resolving your low-slope roofing issues without disrupting occupants inside the building.

Sustainability and environmentally friendly roofing options are in high demand because many businesses and corporations have goals to improve waste reduction and improve energy efficiency. In some areas these same goals are actually written into building codes and have become a requirement. The AcryPly and ARM roof restoration systems use highly reflective AcryShield roof coatings to provide an energy efficient building with cooler indoor ambient temperatures, lowering cooling usage and costs. These systems are sustainable and applied directly on top of your existing roof. This process speeds up installation time and reduces costs, as the systems are not as labor intensive as the installation of a new roof. The roof restoration does not require the existing roof to be torn off, eliminating the contribution of landfill waste and costing you less, as you do not need to pay the landfill fees. These AcryPly and ARM roof restoration systems are also renewable and can be re-coated every 10+ years to lengthen the roof-life, renew the reflectivity, and insure excellent waterproofing capabilities. Read our case study on the F&A Federal Credit Union – A Life Cycle Cost and Savings Study on AcryShield Roof Coatings.

Another huge cost advantage to both the AcryPly and ARM systems are they do not require a business to close during installation. The systems create minimal noise and have low odor (often zero VOC’s), allowing you to conduct business as usual with less disruption to the occupants inside the building. New roof installs can take upward of a few weeks, costing business owners a great amount of revenue loss while their business is closed during the installation process. Restoring your low-slope, commercial roof is far cheaper, faster, and there is much less disruption to your buildings’ occupants than completing an extensive new roof project.

What Flat Roof Materials Do I Need to Coat and Preserve my TPO Roof?

Posted by Nicole Gale on Thu, Jun 18, 2015 @ 11:30 AM

The AcryShield Roof Management (ARM) System is ideal for preserving your TPO roof, while avoiding a roof replacement. The ARM System for TPO was designed to eliminate any priming or etching rinse stages; therefore, saving the contractor time and the building owner money.

When preserving a TPO roof, you will need these 3 flat roof materials:

  1. AcryShield A502 Base Coat – The A502 was specifically formulated for tenaciously adhering directly to TPO. This roof coating allows you to eliminate priming the entire roof substrate before installation begins.
  2. Customized Local Reinforcement – High-tensile strength polyester reinforcing fabrics add superior strength and long term durability to localized areas on the roof that need extra care.
  3. AcryShield Top Coat – The AcryShield top coat you choose can range from our standard elastomeric coating, which provides longevity and brightness with superior dirt pick-up resistance and protection against biological attach, such as algae; to our high performance top coats, that specialize in extra foot traffic and physical abuse protection, ultra high reflectance or fast setting coatings to resist early wash-off associated with light rain and heavy dew. Most these coatings also exceed all ASTM D6083 requirements and also offer excellent tensile strength, elongation and wet adhesion. Contact us for more information 800-423-9557.

Contact a Roofing  Professional  Zero ObligationInstalling an ARM System to lengthen the life of your existing TPO roof is non-disruptive to the work environment and provides ease of application with only 3 installation steps. Depending on the top coat chosen for your project, you can get a roofing system with ZERO VOC’s, otherwise, all the ARM Systems for TPO contain ultra low VOC’s which means there are no harmful or strong odors. Installation is spray applied, creating a monolithic roofing membrane, which is custom tailored to your roofs particular needs and there is no disruptive drilling, nailing or seam welding involved. Your building is able to remain open for business as usual!

When choosing an AcryShield Roof Management System, you are selecting flat roof materials that will protect and extend the lifespan of your aged, leaking TPO roof. You get superior durability and performance with our AcryShield base and top coats with an added benefit of gaining a highly reflective roof substrate which allows you to lower energy usage and consumption – saving you money. The ARM System also lowers roof maintenance costs and increases weatherproofing benefits that allow you to lower the total life-cycle costs of your building.
