What Flat Roof Materials Do I Need to Coat and Preserve my TPO Roof?

Posted by Nicole Gale on Thu, Jun 18, 2015 @ 11:30 AM

The AcryShield Roof Management (ARM) System is ideal for preserving your TPO roof, while avoiding a roof replacement. The ARM System for TPO was designed to eliminate any priming or etching rinse stages; therefore, saving the contractor time and the building owner money.

When preserving a TPO roof, you will need these 3 flat roof materials:

  1. AcryShield A502 Base Coat – The A502 was specifically formulated for tenaciously adhering directly to TPO. This roof coating allows you to eliminate priming the entire roof substrate before installation begins.
  2. Customized Local Reinforcement – High-tensile strength polyester reinforcing fabrics add superior strength and long term durability to localized areas on the roof that need extra care.
  3. AcryShield Top Coat – The AcryShield top coat you choose can range from our standard elastomeric coating, which provides longevity and brightness with superior dirt pick-up resistance and protection against biological attach, such as algae; to our high performance top coats, that specialize in extra foot traffic and physical abuse protection, ultra high reflectance or fast setting coatings to resist early wash-off associated with light rain and heavy dew. Most these coatings also exceed all ASTM D6083 requirements and also offer excellent tensile strength, elongation and wet adhesion. Contact us for more information 800-423-9557.

Depending on the top coat chosen for your project, you can get a roofing system with ZERO VOC’s, otherwise, all the ARM Systems for TPO contain ultra low VOC’s which means there are no harmful or strong odors. Installation is spray applied, creating a monolithic roofing membrane, which is custom tailored to your roofs particular needs and there is no disruptive drilling, nailing or seam welding involved. Your building is able to remain open for business as usual!

When choosing an AcryShield Roof Management System, you are selecting flat roof materials that will protect and extend the lifespan of your aged, leaking TPO roof. You get superior durability and performance with our AcryShield base and top coats with an added benefit of gaining a highly reflective roof substrate which allows you to lower energy usage and consumption – saving you money. The ARM System also lowers roof maintenance costs and increases weatherproofing benefits that allow you to lower the total life-cycle costs of your building.

3 Ways to Determine if Your Single-Ply Roof Needs a Roof Restoration System

Posted by Nicole Gale on Tue, Jun 02, 2015 @ 11:30 AM

singleply-before-coatingIt is always best to be proactive in regards to fixing and restoring your commercial roof; however, this does not always happen because the roof is “out of sight, out of mind” making it easily the most skipped over element in properly maintaining a building.  The good news is more than likely it is not too late to restore or maintain your existing single-ply roof to new. Roof restoration systems extend the lifespan of your roof, lower roof maintenance costs and if maintained properly in the future, can avoid a costly and timely roof tear-off indefinitely.

Lets dive into the most common signs that your single-ply needs a roof restoration system.

Leaks
The most obvious of all - when water penetrates the inside of your building you need to do something quickly. Determining the location of the leak can sometimes be difficult but a professional roof inspector can help.

Deterioration covers several different aspects. If you notice any of the issues in the list below, when inspecting your roof surface, contact us or call 800-423-9557 immediately so we can evaluate your roof and hopefully provide a roof restoration solution so you avoid a tear-off.

  • Blisters
  • Delamination
  • Deterioration
  • Holes
  • Mechanical Abuse Areas
  • Defects on the Roof Membrane

Make sure to double check joint locations at walls, equipment base flashings (HVAC equipment, skylights, etc…) and near pipe penetrations. Make sure all seams holding your single-ply roofing together are working effectively. Seams need to be able to be flexible to expand and contract with the roof’s fluctuations. Seam failure can be the number one cause for damage as water can easily penetrate these areas when they begin aging, chalking and losing their durability and flexibility.

If your single-ply roof is experiencing any of these failures, you will want to consider an AcryShield Roof Maintenance (ARM) System or an AcryPly Roof Restoration System, so you don't have to replace and tear-off your roof later - this will save you thousands of dollars. A Proven and Successful Solution to TPO Roof Restoration - AcryShield A502

Posted by Nicole Gale on Tue, Apr 07, 2015 @ 11:30 AM

036_copyWhile TPO single ply membrane roofing has been around for over 20 years now in the United States, TPO roof replacement is now in full swing for these systems that were installed originally as their anticipated life span has now reached that point where they need to be replaced. The capital expenditure for this process can be overwhelming. National Coatings (NCC) once again as with other single ply membranes prior to these TPO systems developed a base coat and finish coat for this particular membrane’s chemical make-up. In 2006, NCC developed a base coat with self-priming characteristics that eliminate the need for additional primers or etching rinses while exhibiting a tenacious adhesion for both the TPO membrane and the marriage of the finish coat application. This eliminates the necessary additional steps that other manufacturers require which is an added cost in material as well as labor.  The additional bonus is AcryShield A502 can be applied to failing EPDM (Rubber) roofs as well, without the required primer and/or etching rinses by other manufacturers. This formulation by NCC has allowed them to be the only roof coating manufacturer with industry leading capabilities that successfully adhere directly to aged and failing TPO single ply membranes with a proven and verifiable 9-year track record.

The AcryShield A502 base coat has withstood the test of time and has proven to the roofing industry to be a superior choice for maintaining and restoring failing TPO roof membranes. (Check out our TPO roof restoration case studies.) TPO has been known to be difficult to adhere a coatings application directly to its surface because of the way the TPO naturally ages and becomes brittle. This has caused many roofing contractors to avoid a TPO roof restoration project and suggest a roof replacement.

National Coatings however, encourages roof restoration as it saves times, money and the environment, asGet More Info on Direct Adhesion to Aged & Failing EPDM, TPO & Hypalon well as, allows you to lengthen the life span of your existing roof without any business closure during installation. The AcryShield A502 base coat removes the need for specialty primers as previously stated in order to achieve an adequate bond to the TPO.

This base coat provides environmentally friendly benefits as it not only allows you to restore your current aged and failing TPO roof, elevating already overfilled landfills, it also contains minimal volatile organic content (VOC). AcryShield A502 contains only 0.5 VOC’s grams per liter – according to the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) the mandated maximum allowed is 50 VOC’s grams per liter. The removal of most of these dangerous and strong smelling chemicals minimizes installation disruptions to indoor air quality that normally occur with other primers, and etching rinse fumes that can be drawn into the buildings HVAC and fresh air intakes a top the roof assembly allowing your employees and clients to conduct business as usual during the restoration process.

Restoring your aged TPO roof is easier, quicker, and less invasive and provides more cost savings benefits than a traditional roof tear off could ever offer. For more information on our AcryShield A502, download our FREE Guide on Coating Over Aged Single-Plies.
