5 Things to Consider When Selecting an Acrylic Roof Coating for Your Roof

  1. Durability – How well does it resist the effects of UV degradation from the sun? In order for your roof to withstand damaging and harmful UV rays, it needs to be durable. Acrylic roof coatings are resilient, the acrylic used in a roof coating is the same that is used in exterior sealants, Plexiglas®, industrial coatings, house paints and more. They are very durable, providing excellent UV protection.

  2. Low temperature flexibility – Is the coating able to remain flexible at cold temperatures? If the roof is in North Dakota where the temperatures are very cold during fall and winter, the coating must be able to tolerate movement without becoming brittle or cracking. We recommend reviewing roof coating product data sheets to ensure the coating you choose can withstand the temperatures in your climate.

  3. Dirt pickup resistance – An acrylic roof coating provides excellent energy cost savings due to its ability to reflect the sun’s heat away from the building. The whiter and cleaner the rooftop remains, the better it is able to reflect the heat. Therefore, choosing a coating with dirt pickup resistance, will allow the roof to remain whiter for longer, resisting dirt from sticking to the surface, allowing the coating to perform to its fullest capability.

  4. Adhesion – Coatings are created to adhere to particular roof substrates. It is important to choose a coating that is design to adhere to your particular substrate whether it be aged metal, BUR, cap sheet, EPDM, TPO, PVC, Hypalon, etc…

  5. Ponded water resistance – How well does the coating adhere after long term submersion in puddles on the roof? Many roofs have areas where ponded water sits on the roof until it dries out. These areas can cause blisters, delamination and other issues if the coating cannot withstand being submersed in water for an extended period of time.

Look into the AcryShield acrylic roof coating line to find the ideal coating for your roof substrate. These roof coatings provide superior and long lasting durability, adhesion, dirt pickup resistance, flexibility and much more. Download our Free Product Brochure for more information.

AcryShield roof coating systems are comprised of elastomeric, acrylic roof coatings that are rich in UV blocking ingredients. These systems restore the current condition of your roof to new, without the cost of a roof removal.

The high levels of UV blocking pigments protect the roof from the leading cause of roof degradation – the sun. The UV rays from the sun cause the roof to prematurely dry out, leading to embrittlement, thinning out of the membrane, cracks, splits and other failures that cause leaks. Acrylic coating system that have high reflectivity capabilities are able to redirect these damaging rays away from the roof top, prohibiting normal absorption from occurring and allowing the membrane to remain flexible, providing strength, elasticity and durability.

AcryShield acrylic roof coatings are also designed to protect your roof against foot traffic and other harsh conditions that breakdown the protection your roof requires. Your roof needs to be accessed at times to unclog drains, work on rooftop equipment and more, it is important to choose a coating that can withstand damaged caused by normal foot traffic. Our AcryShield A550 coating provides additional strength and durability to the rooftop in order to offer excellent protection against foot traffic and physical abuse. A coating such as the A550 would be ideal to use directly around roof hatches and equipment that will be accessed regularly to ensure proper protection and durability.

For information on roof coating reflectivity capabilities, visit the Cool Roof Rating Councils (CRRC) website to determine the reflectivity capabilities the acrylic roof coating has based on initial and aged solar reflectance and thermal emittance values. The greater the number is for each of the values, the better! (Check out NCC’s roof coatings and systems that are listed with the CRRC.)

SPF Roofing Protected by Acrylic Roof Coatings Provide Great Benefits

Spray Polyurethane Foam or SPF roofing is excellent for restoring your current roof or as a new construction project. The foam used in these systems must be coated with a roof coating in order to provide the SPF roof with adequate protection needed from deterioration caused by the sun’s Ultra Violet (UV) radiation and water infiltration.

Learn about the Benefits of Coating an SPF Roof Download our FREE GuideAcrylic roof coatings are among the most popular in the roofing industry for protecting SPF because of their strength and ability to adhere to the spray foam. These coatings have a long history of success (check out our SPF Case Histories), high quality ingredients, and fire retardants that work together to construct a seamless, durable, and flexible membrane with excellent resistance to UV destruction and water penetration.

When you combine SPF roofing with an acrylic roof coating system, you gain the strength and protection needed for the roof to function properly, as well as, excellent insulation, custom slope and superior reflectivity. These systems provide customizable levels of insulation to reduce heat loss and gain to the building, allowing your building to remain a consistent indoor temperature with less need to heat or cool the building. Custom slope can be created with the spray polyurethane foam for improved proper water drainage and ponded water protection.  High solar reflectance and thermal emittance properties gained from the acrylic roof coatings ability to reflect the sun’s heat away from the rooftop, lowers energy cooling costs and contributes to the reduction of heat transfer to the inside of the building, allowing the building to remain cooler on a hot day.

National Coatings has several SPF roofing systems coupled with acrylic roof coatings to provide all the benefits mentioned above. With over 33 years of proven performance, the AcryShield SPF Roofing Systems can decrease your energy consumption and costs. This is a huge reduction in cost based off California’s energy-efficiency movement - Flex Your Power© which states “A 30% reduction in energy consumption can lower operating costs by $25,000 a year for every 50,000 square feet of office space.” If you are interested in more information on SPF Roofing or the Benefits of Coating an SPF Roof, download our FREE Guide.
